Mama’s Homemade Apple Pie

A traditional homemade apple pie is one of the desserts that evokes the most warmth and nostalgia. It's the warm, inviting atmosphere of family gathered around the kitchen table, the flaky golden crust that crumbles with every bite, and the aroma of cinnamon and baked apples filling the air.

Ingredients

  • ½ stick 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 can 21 oz apple pie filling OR diced fresh apples, cooked

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch pie dish or baking pan.
Make the crust base:
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and granulated sugar. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add the buttermilk:
  1. Gradually stir in the buttermilk until the dough starts to come together and forms a slightly sticky batter.
Press the crust:
  1. Take about two-thirds of the dough and press it evenly into the bottom and up the sides of the prepared pie dish, forming a solid crust layer.
Add the filling:
  1. Pour the apple pie filling (or cooked diced apples) evenly over the crust.
Top layer:
  1. Crumble the remaining one-third of the dough over the apple filling, covering it like a crumb topping.
Bake:
  1. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Cool and serve:
  1. Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
  2. Enjoy!
