Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake

It's more than just a dessert; it's a nostalgic experience that transports you to family get-togethers, birthday celebrations, and comfortable afternoons spent sipping milk and enjoying a piece of cake. This traditional chocolate cake emphasizes moist texture, rich, deep chocolate flavor, and a soft crumb that melts in your mouth, in contrast to trendy or extremely ornate desserts.

Ingredients

For the Cake:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups water
  • cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the Frosting:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 package 3.9 oz instant chocolate pudding mix (or flavor of your choice)
  • 1 8 oz package frozen whipped topping, thawed

Method

Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan.
Mix Dry Ingredients
  1. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
Add Wet Ingredients
  1. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Add the water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract. Mix everything until well combined and smooth.
Bake the Cake
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
Prepare the Frosting
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mix and milk until thickened (about 2 minutes). Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until smooth and combined.
Frost the Cake
  1. Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled cake.
Chill and Serve
  1. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the frosting to set.
  2. Enjoy!
