Slow cooker baked ziti

January 4, 2026 //  by Ann

A warm, cheesy dish that fills your kitchen with tantalizing scents has a very comforting quality. That’s precisely what Slow Cooker Baked Ziti is: the ideal combination of pasta, flavorful tomato sauce, and luscious melted cheese that feels like a hug on a plate. The easiest thing about this recipe is how simple it is to prepare. You can make a family-sized meal that tastes like it has been simmering for hours without having to stand over the stove by using a slow cooker and a few basic ingredients. Every bite is irresistible due to the layers of soft pasta, hearty meat (or vegetables), and melted mozzarella, and the slow cooker takes care of everything while you go about your day. Everyone arrives at the table anticipating this dish, and they continue to smile long after they’ve had their last bite.

What Makes This Recipe My Favorite?

This recipe is easy, filling, and adaptable, which is why I adore it. Because the slow cooker handles all the cooking, you can spend more time with loved ones and less time in the kitchen. Hours of slow cooking allow the flavors to blend harmoniously, giving the cheese its ideal gooey texture and the sauce a deep, rich flavor. It’s reassuring, fulfilling, and consistently popular.

Serving Recommendations

To counterbalance the dish’s richness, serve your Slow Cooker Baked Ziti with roasted vegetables, garlic bread, or a crisp green salad. Just before serving, scatter some fresh parsley or basil on top for a pop of color and freshness. For a particularly memorable meal, serve it with a glass of red wine.

Freezing and Storage

You can keep leftovers in the fridge for three to four days if you store them in an airtight container. Cover with foil and reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until thoroughly heated. Baked ziti can also be frozen before baking; just put it together in a baking dish or slow cooker insert that is safe to use in the freezer, cover it tightly, and freeze it for up to three months. Before cooking, let it thaw overnight in the fridge.

Different Iterations of the Recipe

This is a very flexible recipe. Use turkey, Italian sausage, or even a plant-based substitute in place of ground beef. Add vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or bell peppers for extra nutrition. Try combining mozzarella, provolone, and Parmesan for a unique take on cheese. For a richer version, try experimenting with different sauces, like a creamy Alfredo.

Potlucks, cozy weekend dinners, and hectic weeknights are all great occasions for Slow Cooker Baked Ziti. It’s simple to make, incredibly adaptable, and sure to become a mainstay in your repertoire of recipes.

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 jar 24 oz marinara sauce
  • 1 can 15 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil for garnish optional

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage until fully browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the cooked meat to your slow cooker. Pour in the marinara sauce and crushed tomatoes. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, then stir to combine.
  3. Add the uncooked ziti pasta directly into the slow cooker, stirring well to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of ricotta cheese over the top of the pasta mixture, spreading them slightly with the back of a spoon.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 3–4 hours, or until the pasta is tender and cooked through.
  6. About 20 minutes before serving, sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top. Cover again and allow the cheese to melt into a bubbly, golden topping.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil if desired, and enjoy a comforting, cheesy, and flavorful baked ziti.
  8. Enjoy!
