There’s something comforting about an old-fashioned, hearty casserole that reminds you of family dinners and cozy evenings at home. This Old-Fashioned Pork Chops Casserole is the ultimate example of classic comfort food. Tender pork chops are nestled in a creamy, savory sauce, layered with onions and a touch of seasoning, then baked to perfection. Every bite is packed with flavor, and it’s the kind of dish that warms your soul as much as it satisfies your appetite.

Why I Love This Recipe:
I love this casserole because it brings together the flavors of a traditional home-cooked meal with minimal effort. The pork chops stay juicy and tender while baking in the creamy sauce, and the flavors meld beautifully during the cooking process. It’s nostalgic, simple to prepare, and a crowd-pleaser for both kids and adults. It’s the perfect recipe for busy weeknights or a comforting weekend meal.

Serving Suggestions:
This casserole pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, buttered rice, or even roasted vegetables. You can serve it alongside a simple green salad to add a fresh, crisp contrast to the rich flavors of the pork chops and creamy sauce. For a more indulgent twist, drizzle some extra pan sauce over the side dishes to tie the meal together.

Storage & Freezing:
Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. To reheat, cover with foil and bake at 350°F until warmed through, or microwave individual portions for a quick meal. This casserole also freezes well—either before baking or after cooling. If freezing before baking, cover tightly with foil and bake from frozen, adding extra 15–20 minutes to the cooking time.

Variations of the Recipe:
You can easily customize this dish to suit your tastes. Add mushrooms, bell peppers, or carrots to the casserole for extra flavor and nutrition. Swap out the cream or milk for a lighter option like half-and-half or Greek yogurt for a tangy twist. For an herby flavor boost, sprinkle some thyme, rosemary, or paprika over the pork chops before baking. You can also experiment with different cheese blends in the sauce for an added creamy texture.

This Old-Fashioned Pork Chops Casserole is comfort food at its finest—simple, hearty, and full of flavor. It’s the kind of meal that will have everyone asking for seconds and feeling warm inside, making it a must-have recipe for your family dinner rotation.

Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 4 large pork chops bone-in or boneless
  • 6 medium-to-large gold potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 14 oz. chicken broth
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Layer the thinly sliced potatoes evenly across the bottom of the prepared dish. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  3. Season both sides of the pork chops with salt and pepper. In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the oil and sear the pork chops on both sides until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté until tender and slightly caramelized.
  5. Add the butter and flour to the onions, stirring to form a smooth paste. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth until fully combined, continuing to cook until the mixture thickens into a gravy.
  6. Stir in the cream of chicken soup until smooth and well incorporated. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
  7. Pour the creamy gravy over the layered potatoes in the casserole dish. Carefully place the seared pork chops on top of the potatoes and gravy.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 50 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, allowing the pork chops to brown slightly.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 10–15 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the gravy to thicken slightly.
  10. Enjoy!
