5 Ingredient Apple Dumplings

April 4, 2026 //  by Ann

There’s something timeless about apple dumplings baking in the oven. The scent of warm apples, buttery pastry, and caramelizing sugar drifting through the kitchen instantly makes everything feel cozier. These 5 Ingredient Apple Dumplings are the kind of dessert that reminds you why simple recipes are often the most memorable.

With just a handful of pantry staples, you get tender apples wrapped in flaky pastry and baked in a rich, buttery sauce that turns into a sweet syrup as it cooks. The magic happens in the oven — the dough becomes golden and slightly crisp on top, while underneath it soaks up that warm cinnamon-apple goodness. Every bite is soft, sweet, and comforting.

What makes this recipe truly special is how approachable it is. There’s no complicated dough to make from scratch, no candy thermometer, no fancy techniques. It’s perfect for beginner bakers, busy weeknights, or last-minute gatherings when you want a homemade dessert without spending hours in the kitchen. Yet despite its simplicity, it feels impressive when served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting over the top.

This is the kind of dessert that feels like it belongs at Sunday dinner, holiday tables, or family gatherings where everyone lingers just a little longer over dessert. It’s nostalgic, cozy, and guaranteed to bring smiles. Sometimes the best recipes aren’t the most elaborate — they’re the ones that make you feel at home.

Why Do I Love This Recipe?

I love this recipe because it delivers big comfort with minimal effort. It’s incredibly easy to prepare, uses simple ingredients, and tastes like something much more complicated. The balance of tender apples and flaky pastry is classic and satisfying. Plus, it makes the whole house smell amazing while it bakes — and that’s always a win.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce
  • Top with fresh whipped cream
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon or powdered sugar
  • Pair with hot coffee or apple cider

They’re best enjoyed warm when the syrup is bubbling and the pastry is golden.

Storage and Freezing

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or warm in a 300°F oven until heated through.

To freeze, let dumplings cool completely. Wrap individually and store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Variations of the Recipe

  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Sprinkle apple pie spice for extra warmth
  • Use pears instead of apples
  • Swap brown sugar for white sugar
  • Add a splash of vanilla extract to the sauce

Simple ingredients, timeless flavor, and pure comfort in every bite.

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 20 oz can apple pie filling
  • 1 can lemon-lime soda

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Open the crescent roll cans and carefully separate the dough into individual triangles.
  3. Spoon a small amount of apple pie filling onto the wide end of each triangle. Do not overfill.
  4. Starting at the wide end, gently roll the dough toward the pointed end, enclosing the filling. Place each dumpling seam-side down in the prepared baking dish.
  5. In a medium bowl, mix the softened butter and brown sugar together until well combined.
  6. Spoon a small amount of the butter mixture over the top of each dumpling, spreading lightly.
  7. Slowly pour the lemon-lime soda into the baking dish, pouring it around the dumplings rather than directly on top.
  8. Bake uncovered for 35–45 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Spoon some of the sweet sauce from the pan over each dumpling when serving.
  10. Enjoy!
