Few dishes are as comforting and timeless as a warm, hearty bowl of goulash. This classic American-style goulash is a true all-in-one meal—rich tomato sauce, tender ground beef, and perfectly cooked pasta come together in a dish that’s both satisfying and budget-friendly. There’s something magical about the way the flavors meld as it simmers, creating a savory, cozy experience that instantly reminds you of home. Whether it’s a weeknight dinner after a long day or a casual family gathering, this goulash is simple to make but full of flavor, making it a staple recipe that everyone will love.

Why Do I Love This Recipe?
I love this goulash recipe because it’s straightforward, forgiving, and endlessly satisfying. The combination of ground beef, tender pasta, and tomato sauce hits all the comfort-food notes, while the mild seasonings allow the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine. It’s a dish that feels like a warm hug on a plate, and it’s easy enough to make in one pot, which means minimal cleanup—a huge win for busy weeknights.

Serving Suggestions
Goulash is incredibly versatile when it comes to serving. Spoon it into bowls with a sprinkle of shredded cheddar or parmesan cheese on top, or pair it with a slice of crusty bread or garlic toast to soak up every bit of the rich sauce. A side of simple steamed vegetables or a crisp green salad can balance the meal, adding freshness and color to the plate.

Storage & Freezing
This goulash keeps beautifully in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Store it in an airtight container, and when you’re ready to enjoy, reheat on the stovetop over low heat or in the microwave until warmed through. It’s also freezer-friendly: portion it into meal-sized containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating for a quick and comforting meal any day of the week.

Variations of the Recipe
You can easily customize this goulash to suit your taste or pantry supplies. Swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. Add vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, or mushrooms to increase nutrition and flavor. For a cheesy twist, stir in a handful of shredded cheese just before serving. For a bit of spice, sprinkle in red pepper flakes or use a spicy tomato sauce. No matter how you tweak it, this goulash always turns out hearty, delicious, and full of comfort.

Course: Dinner, Lunch, Main Course
Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup uncooked elbow macaroni
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 28 oz can diced tomatoes undrained
  • ⅔ cup frozen corn
  • 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 4 oz can diced green chiles
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro chopped

Method

Cook the macaroni:
  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook until al dente. Drain and rinse with cold water, then set aside.
Brown the beef:
  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fully browned and the onions are soft. Drain any excess grease.
Add the sauce ingredients:
  1. Reduce heat to medium. Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, frozen corn, diced green chiles, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together until well combined.
Simmer:
  1. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Combine with pasta:
  1. Add the cooked macaroni to the skillet and stir until the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce.
Finish and serve:
  1. Stir in the chopped fresh cilantro right before serving for a fresh, bright flavor. Serve hot and enjoy!
  2. Enjoy!
