Walking Tacos Recipe You Can Take Anywhere

August 25, 2020 //  by Marie

Walking Tacos has to be one of the most popular and easiest recipes to make for your family, but just what is a “Walking Taco?”  No, I can promise you that it’s not a taco with legs.  Walking Tacos are single-serving bags of corn/tortilla chips, opened and filled with a spicy taco filling, and all of your favorite taco toppings!  Quick to make, perfectly portable, and an exceedingly popular recipe for entertaining at casual parties or to take to the campsite!

Walking Tacos are a brilliant way to enjoy your favorite tacos.  They are simple, fun, and a very popular way to serve tasty food to a room full of people on game nights. You can also easily assemble all of the ingredients prior to going camping with the family, ready to throw together and reheat when you get to the campground. No-fuss and no muss! We love them!

Ingredients for Walking Tacos

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE WALKING TACOS

All that is needed are a very few ordinary ingredients. Your garnishes can be as simple or as complicated as you wish.

INGREDIENTS
8 ounces Jack cheese, grated
1 pound extra lean ground beef
½ package of taco seasoning
12 bags of corn or tortilla chips

HINTS AND TIPS TO MAKE THE BEST WALKING TACOS

Follow my hints and tips to make your Walking Taco experience the best one ever!  Sure success!

1. Read through the recipe several times to familiarise yourself with any ingredients and equipment needed to make this recipe. This will give you a chance to pick up anything you might be missing.

2. Assemble everything you need prior to beginning to cook the recipe. This can help to prevent you from leaving out anything integral to the recipe.

3. I like to use an extra lean ground steak. If you use ground steak, you may pay a bit more than you would for a regular hamburger, but you won’t be pouring anything down the drain either. What you are getting is pure meat with an excellent flavor and very little fat.

4. If you like your tacos extra spicy you can use more than ½ packet of the seasoning, or add some chopped onion, garlic, and jalapeno pepper to the meat when you are frying it. The choice is yours.

Cutting Open Bag of Tortilla Chips

5. You can of course open your bags of tortilla chips at the top for each taco, but I find cutting a slice from the side of the bag makes them much easier to fill and to eat. If you are doing this for a party, have all of your bags of chips cut open and ready to fill.

Grating Cheese

6. If possible, grate your own cheese to top them with, and use a flavour-filled one.  I used Jack cheese, but you can also use Pepper Jack if you are fond of spicy flavours. A good medium cheddar also works well.

7. If enjoying at home, set all of your ingredients out as in a Taco bar so that everyone can help themselves.

8. If transporting for camping, measure out everything, and store in individual containers/baggies ready to open and use at the campsite. I would also brown the meat ahead of time so that all you need to do it so reheat it on top of the grill at the campground.  This makes for a perfect “first-night” supper.

9. Tell your family/guests to crush their chips a little bit before adding the taco meat and garnishes.  This will make them a lot easier to eat.

HOW TO MAKE WALKING TACOS

There is nothing complicated here!

Step 1

Add the ground beef to a heated skillet.  Cook over medium heat, breaking it up with a fork or wooden spoon until no pink remains.  Add the taco seasoning and continue to brown until thoroughly cooked through.

Adding Garnishes to Walking Tacos

Walking Tacos make the perfect dinner for crazy weeknights or family parties, or even just because you are wanting to enjoy something fun, delicious, and simple with the family.

SUGGESTED GARNISHES FOR WALKING TACOS

Suggested Garnishes for Walking Tacos Recipe

You can make your garnishes for your tacos as simple or as complicated as you wish.  Today we went simple with just some sliced olives, shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes and sliced green onions.

You could also serve them with your favourite salsas, guacamole, or pickled jalapenos. They are even delicious when you skip the taco meat all together and just top the chips with some leftover and reheated chili!

Walking Tacos Ready to Serve

The best way to serve these is to set everything up like a Taco Bar and allow people to help themselves!

DO I NEED TO USE BEEF TO MAKE WALKING TACOS?

No, absolutely not! Feel free to use any ground meat to make your tacos, or even an acceptable vegan/vegetarian substitute for meat such as tofu crumbles, etc.  We also love these made with ground turkey! Chopped rotisserie chicken, reheated and spiced with taco seasoning also works very well.

CAN I MAKE THIS AHEAD OF TIME?

Absolutely! Cook/prepare your taco meat and pop it into the crockpot along with ¼ cup of water and keep warm on a low setting. Cover and keep warm until you are ready to serve!

CAN I DOUBLE THIS RECIPE?

You can positively double or even triple this recipe ready to feed as many people as you are wanting to feed.
