Chocolate cobbler is one of the few desserts that feels like a warm hug on a cold day. This traditional dessert, which is baked until bubbling and golden, combines the comforting texture of a soft, cakey topping with the rich, deep flavors of chocolate. A simple yet decadent dessert that will satisfy your sweet tooth is chocolate cobbler.

The easiest part of making chocolate cobbler is how it comes together. In contrast to more intricate chocolate desserts, this cobbler only needs a few basic ingredients and little preparation time, but the end product is rich and delicious. A rich contrast of textures is produced by the melted chocolate layer underneath the soft, subtly sweetened batter: warm, cakey topping and gooey, silky chocolate. It feels like a little party with each spoonful.

Why Do I Love This Recipe?

I adore this recipe because it’s quick, comforting, and perfectly chocolatey. It doesn’t require fancy ingredients or complicated techniques, making it accessible for bakers of all levels. Plus, it’s versatile—you can enjoy it warm right out of the oven or chilled, and it pairs well with many toppings. This dessert is a go-to when I want something homemade but fuss-free.

Serving Suggestions

Serve chocolate cobbler warm with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream to balance the rich chocolate flavors. Fresh berries like raspberries or strawberries also add a lovely, tart contrast. For extra decadence, drizzle caramel sauce or sprinkle chopped nuts on top.

Storage & Freezing

Chocolate cobbler stores well covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave to enjoy that fresh-baked warmth. You can also freeze baked cobbler in airtight containers for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and warm gently before serving.

Variations of the Recipe

Feel free to add a pinch of cinnamon or espresso powder to deepen the chocolate flavor. Swap regular cocoa powder for dark or Dutch-processed cocoa for a richer taste. You can also mix in chocolate chips or swirl in peanut butter or marshmallow fluff before baking for a fun twist.

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder for batter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder for topping
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
Make the Batter:
  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, self-rising flour, sugar, and 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder. Slowly add the milk and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
Spread Batter:
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
Add Cocoa Powder & Boiling Water:
