Recipes that bring back memories of your early years, such as those you prepared with your mother or grandmother while perched on a chair at the counter and sneaking samples when no one else was around, have a certain allure. For me, one of those treats is these peanut butter balls. They are the ideal bite-sized treat that has all the flavors of a classic hug: sweet, salty, creamy, and chocolate-covered. These little no-bake treats are always a hit, whether you’re making them for the holidays, giving them as gifts to friends, or just to sate a late-night craving.

They require no baking and only a few basic ingredients from the pantry: peanut butter, butter, powdered sugar, and chocolate. What’s the best part? You can prepare a large quantity ahead of time and store them in the freezer for when the mood strikes. My children enjoy helping to dip the balls in chocolate and roll the dough. It’s messy, enjoyable, and always ends with broad smiles and sticky fingers.

Why Do I Love This Recipe?

I love how easy and nostalgic this recipe is. It reminds me of holidays, school bake sales, and lazy Sunday afternoons. There’s something about the creamy peanut butter center with the smooth chocolate shell that just hits every craving. Plus, no oven required — which is a win in the summer or busy seasons.

Serving Suggestions

Serve peanut butter balls chilled on a dessert platter, especially around the holidays. Stack them in cupcake liners for a cute presentation, or package them in gift boxes for thoughtful homemade treats. You can also crush a few and sprinkle them over ice cream or mix into brownie batter for extra indulgence.

Storage & Freezing

Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. I recommend placing parchment paper between layers to keep them from sticking. Thaw frozen peanut butter balls in the fridge before serving.

Variations of the Recipe

  • Crunchy twist: Use crunchy peanut butter for added texture.
  • Chocolate drizzle: Instead of dipping fully, just drizzle chocolate on top.
  • Swap the coating: Try white chocolate or dark chocolate for a different flavor.
  • Add-ins: Mix in crushed graham crackers, mini chocolate chips, or a pinch of sea salt into the dough.

No matter how you make them, these peanut butter balls are a timeless classic that always bring joy.

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cups peanut butter
  • 1 1/3 cups crushed graham crackers
  • 2 sticks 1 cup margarine or butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pound box powdered sugar
  • 1/3 block paraffin wax optional – helps chocolate set firmly
  • 12 oz bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

Method

Make the Peanut Butter Mixture:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the peanut butter, crushed graham crackers, melted butter or margarine, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Stir together until everything is well mixed and forms a thick dough-like consistency.
Shape into Balls:
  1. Scoop out small portions of the mixture and roll into 1-inch balls using your hands. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment or wax paper. Once all the balls are rolled, refrigerate them for about 30 minutes to firm up.
Prepare the Chocolate Coating:
  1. In a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water, melt the paraffin wax (if using) together with the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir constantly until the mixture is smooth and fully melted.
Dip the Balls:
  1. Using a toothpick or fork, dip each chilled peanut butter ball into the melted chocolate mixture, coating it completely. Let any excess chocolate drip off, then place the dipped ball back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
Let Them Set:
  1. Once all the balls are coated, place the tray in the refrigerator until the chocolate has completely hardened, about 30–45 minutes.
Serve or Store:
  1. Enjoy right away, or transfer to an airtight container for storage.
  2. Enjoy!
