A tray of homemade lasagna bubbling out of the oven has a classic and cozy quality. Everyone is drawn to the table by the aroma alone—savory meat sauce blending with garlic and melted cheese. A labor of love, this traditional Italian-American dish yields layers of rich flavor, a satisfying texture, and results that are sure to please the whole family. Lasagne is always a welcome sight, whether it’s for a special weekend meal, a warm holiday get-together, or a dish to bring to a friend in need.

Because it incorporates so many popular ingredients—pasta, seasoned meat, creamy ricotta, gooey mozzarella, and a hearty marinara sauce—lasagne has earned a permanent spot in our kitchen. It’s hearty, cozy, and nostalgic without being pretentious or fussy. Additionally, after all those flavors have had time to combine, the dish tastes even better the following day.

Why Do I Love This Recipe?

I love this lasagna recipe because it strikes the perfect balance between savory meatiness and cheesy comfort. It’s also endlessly customizable. Whether you’re feeding a crowd or prepping freezer meals, it’s a go-to dish that never disappoints. It brings back memories of big family dinners and is just as satisfying to prepare as it is to enjoy.

Serving Suggestions

Serve a generous square of lasagna alongside a crisp Caesar salad or a simple green salad with balsamic vinaigrette. Add a side of warm garlic bread or a rustic Italian loaf for mopping up every bit of sauce. For drinks, a glass of Chianti or a sparkling Italian soda makes the perfect pairing.

Storage & Freezing

Lasagna stores beautifully! Once cooled, cover it tightly and refrigerate for up to 5 days. For freezing, wrap individual portions or the entire tray in foil and plastic wrap, then freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and warm in a 350°F oven until heated through, about 30–40 minutes.

Variations of the Recipe

The beauty of lasagna lies in its flexibility. Try swapping the ground beef for Italian sausage or going meatless with sautéed spinach and mushrooms. Use no-boil noodles for a faster prep. Prefer a white sauce? Substitute béchamel for marinara. You can also experiment with different cheeses—Fontina, provolone, or even a touch of blue cheese for a flavor punch.

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:
  • 2 lbs ground sirloin
  • 1 24 oz jar meat-flavored spaghetti sauce
  • ½ tablespoon salt
  • ½ tablespoon black pepper
  • ½ tablespoon garlic powder
For the Cheese Layer:
  • 8 oz sour cream
  • 8 oz small curd cottage cheese
  • 6 oz cream cheese softened
  • 6 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
Pasta & Toppings:
  • 12 lasagna noodles cooked and drained
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Method

Preheat Oven:
  1. Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook the Meat Sauce:
  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat, brown the ground sirloin until fully cooked. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the spaghetti sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Simmer for 10–15 minutes to let the flavors blend. Remove from heat.
Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
  1. In a medium bowl, combine sour cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese, and Parmesan. Mix until well combined and creamy.
Assemble the Lasagna:
  1. In a large 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce to coat the bottom.
  2. Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  3. Spread ⅓ of the cheese mixture over the noodles.
  4. Add ⅓ of the remaining meat sauce, then sprinkle with ⅓ of the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
  5. Repeat the layers two more times, ending with a generous topping of both cheeses.
Bake:
  1. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Rest & Serve:
  1. Let the lasagna sit for 10–15 minutes before slicing to allow it to set. Serve warm and enjoy!
  2. Enjoy!
