Sloppy joes are such a popular dish but there are lots of different recipes to try out. This one boasts the best of everything with juicy ground beef, tasty cheese, a tangy sauce, and Texas toast (this works so well in place of the usual buns!)

The perfect blend of sweet and savory flavors makes this a dinner everyone is going to remember for all the right reasons. Don’t forget the napkins because these can be a little messy to eat. Everyone is going to be impressed with these and all you have to do is wait for all those compliments to come rolling in!

Sloppy joes can be tweaked however you wish, so if you prefer buns to Texas toast, you can use those, and you can also change the sauce to make it sweeter or less sweet, or even change up the vegetables to make it a perfect fit for your palate.

Why You’ll Love the Recipe:

This delicious riff on classic sloppy joes is even more tasty than the original, as it uses Texas toast, which is a thick, crunchy kind of bread, along with some cheese on top for that cheeseburger appeal.

How to Serve It:

Enjoy these as soon as they’re made. If there’s a pause, the sloppy joes will make the Texas toast soggy.

Can You Make It Ahead?

No, this dish is best made fresh and then served right away.

Storage Instructions:

Leftover meat mixture will keep for up to 4 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Don’t toast the bread until you’re going to serve them, otherwise it will get soggy.

Variations and Substitutions:

Feel free to sub red bell pepper for the green bell pepper, or forget it altogether and just add some extra onion. Sliced mushrooms would work too. Looking for spicy sloppy joes? Add some minced chilies to the beef mixture.

Ingredients:

  • Ground beef
  • Green bell pepper
  • Onion
  • Water
  • Ketchup
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Brown sugar
  • Garlic powder
  • Yellow mustard
  • White American cheese
  • Texas toast bread

How to make Homemade Sloppy Joes:

Step 1. Saute the meat, peppers and onion in a skillet and drain off the excess grease.

Step 2. Preheat the broiler to a high heat.

Step 3. Add the water, ketchup, sugar, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and mustard to the skillet.

Step 4. Turn the heat down and cook for 5 to 10 minutes or until thickened.

Step 5. Toast the Texas toast slices under the broiler for 30 seconds or until golden brown.

Step 6. Add a slice of cheese on top of 3 of them and then ladle the beef mixture on top.

Step 7. Add the other 3 Texas toast slices on top and serve right away.

Sloppy joes are one of the most delicious types of comfort food you can make. This tangy beef dish is flavored with worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and more. This recipe uses white American cheese and Texas toast to make it extra-special!
